The German police arrested two migrants who are accused of raping a Ukrainian refugee woman in Düsseldorf in early March after she fled to Germany from Ukraine. The officials are currently clarifying the nationality of the two men, a police spokeswoman said to Junge Freiheit.

According to the Bild daily, the suspects are a 37-year-old Iraqi and a 26-year-old Nigerian, although some other media reports are claiming the Iraqi is actually a Tunisian. Both suspects also had Ukrainian passports. It is also being investigated how they obtained Ukrainian citizenship.

Bild reported that officials in the border area have recently encountered migrants who did not come directly from Ukraine but, for example, from Africa. Remix News has also previously reported that many of the migrants coming from Ukraine are originally from Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

The police spokeswoman did not want to comment on the residence status and possible criminal records of the two suspects. The men and the 18-year-old Ukrainian are said to have been accommodated in the  “Oscar Wilde” hotel ship. At the time of the crime, 25 Ukrainian refugees were staying there in addition to the usual guests.

The head of the federal police union, Heiko Teggatz, appealed to politicians to do everything possible to prevent such cases in the future.

“Hard and quick punishment followed by deportation is the only language that such perpetrators understand,” he told the Bild newspaper.

“Smuggling, human trafficking, and the promotion of prostitution are part of crime geography. If these areas of crime are not resolutely countered when entering Europe and Germany, criminal gangs will shamelessly exploit the plight of the people from Ukraine,” Teggatz added.

CSU parliamentary group leader Andrea Lindholz calls on the authorities to ensure the protection of Ukrainian women with controls in refugee accommodation in the future. The Düsseldorf case obliges us to act immediately, she stated.

It is not the first time refugees have been identified as sex offenders. In February, the police in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania arrested an asylum seeker from Afghanistan who is said to have raped an eleven-year-old girl. Migrants involved in sexual offenses have been reported on extensively in Germany. In the country, an estimated two gang rapes occur per day, with half of the suspects foreigners. Some of the most high-profile cases have involved up to ten migrant men raping one German girl. The mass sexual assault of over 2,000 German women by predominately Middle Eastern and North African migrants on New Year’s Eve in Cologne in 2015 marked a watershed moment in Germany, but the incident and other high-profile crimes have not slowed enthusiasm for mass immigration in Germany.

In recent years, the proportion of suspected foreigners in sexual offenses has risen significantly, with the number of foreigners involved in sexual offenses growing from 35 percent to 42.44 percent of the total cases between 2000 and 2020.
