Former U.S. President Donald Trump has thrown his weight behind Viktor Orbán, praising the job the Hungarian prime minister has done until now and endorsing him for reelection later this year.

In a statement published via the Save America campaign organization, Trump praised the Hungarian leader’s love for his country and his desire to keep his people safe.

“He has done a powerful and wonderful job in protecting Hungary, stopping illegal immigration, creating jobs, trade, and should be allowed to continue to do so in the upcoming election,” Trump said.

“He is a strong leader and respected by all. He has my Complete support and Endorsement for reelection as Prime Minister!”

Hungary and the United States enjoyed a warm relationship during Trump’s presidency, with Orbán famously being extended an invitation to the Oval Office in May 2019, at which Trump lavished praise on the “tremendous job” the Hungarian prime minister had done to protect his people.

Orbán is nearing the end of his fourth term, following electoral victories in 1998, 2010, 2014, and 2018 — the latter three with a two-thirds majority. The Hungarian general election is expected to be held this April or May.
